A journey through time to the heart of the Saint-Henri neighbourhood! 

Did you know that before becoming the district we know today, Saint-Henri was a city in its own right? In fact, it was the third most populous town in Québec. In the 19th century, its growing population and industrial development had a profound effect on the village’s economic life, society, and landscape, transforming it into a city. This lecture explores the history of this city prior to its annexation to Montréal in 1905. What remains of this era can still be seen in the neighbourhood as it exists today? Join us on a journey of discovery and learn about the history of the Saint-Henri neighbourhood. 

 

Joanne Burgess 

Joanne Burgess, Ph.D., has focused her research on the history of industrialization and labour, as well as on the evolution of society and urban space in the 19th and 20th centuries. Her work also reflects her interest in urban heritage. She has taken part in studies documenting the heritage of Old Montréal, as well as the history and heritage of the historic and natural district of Mount Royal. She has also contributed to projects that aim to make history a lever for social and community development.
