This panel will touch on the challenges and joys of literary translation, the tasks and processes of a translator, and the differences between the translation of poetry, fiction, and plays. Enjoy this lively bilingual discussion with local translators Simon Brown, Jenny Montgomery, and Pablo Strauss!

Simon Brown

Simon Brown (he/they/il/iel) is an interdisciplinary artist, poet, and translator from rural New Brunswick based in the Quebec City area. Simon’s English and French-language texts have appeared in literary journals, zines, chapbooks, and poetry collections. Their works have also been presented in media artworks, films, dance pieces, operettas, experimental readings, and performances at the Banff Centre (Banff), VERSeFest (Ottawa), Frye Festival (Moncton), Centre international de poésie (Marseille), Maison de la littérature (Quebec City), Festival acadien de poésie (Caraquet), and the Darling Foundry (Montreal), among others. Simon regularly collaborates with many poets, musicians and artists, including Maude Pilon, Alexandre St-Onge, Olivia Tapiero, and Maude Veilleux, as well as with collectives such as le Patio, Ramen, and l’Ensemble de musique improvisée de Québec. An anthology of Simon’s performance poems, La surface vivante: poèmes pour la voix 2014–2024, will be published by Les Herbes rouges in 2026. simonbrown.ca

Jenny Montgomery

Before coming to Québec, Jenny Montgomery worked as a director, assistant director, and playwright in Chicago for seven years. In Québec City, she served as assistant director for Kevin McCoy's Norge (Trident). She has had three directing observerships with Robert Lepage: Lipsynch (2007); Frame by Frame, a dance project in collaboration with the National Ballet of Canada (2015); and Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a collaboration between Stratford Festival and Ex Machina (2025). In 2013, she translated Lepage's Needles and Opium into English. She directed L'Envol, her autobiographical project that incorporated dance (Chantiers 2016). Her current project in creation, We the Noras, brings together theatre, dance, and documentary interviews to explore women’s relationship with money. For this project, she translated key passages from Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House from the original Dano-Norwegian to French. In addition, Jenny has written four documentary plays on social and transcultural issues. jennymontgomery.net

Pablo Strauss

Pablo Strauss grew up in Victoria, B.C. and settled in Quebec City, where he has lived for two decades. He has translated many works of Quebec fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels, including Trash! A Garbageman’s Story, Horsefly, and What I Know About You. He also publishes translations, reviews, and essays in outlets including Granta, Geist, The Literary Review of Canada and The Montreal Review of Books.
