Description
At first, the space is empty. On the floor, a mop bucket sits beneath a single drop of water falling from the ceiling. The audience enters the stage and takes their seats. A second drop joins the first, then a third. There is no longer any doubt—the theatre is leaking, and the audience is alone with the mess. After spending a moment listening to the sound of the dripping, distant music begins to approach.
It is the L’eau du bain family, dressed in soaked, brightly coloured raincoats. Anne-Marie pulls a cart carrying all their gear, with Inès perched on top. Joined by Jeanne and Thomas, they are ready to welcome the catastrophe.
Buckets and pots come out first, though they quickly realize that some objects resonate better than others. A tarp is stretched above certain audience members to keep them dry. In this rainy-camping soundscape, these spectators become the centre of attention. Then Inès gets the idea to make tea from the collected water and serve it around. This joyful ceremony is as bewildering as it is playful, and little by little the drops begin to find their rhythm. Drum shells are placed under the leaks, and the great symphony of water damage begins on its own.
Biography
Whether on a frozen lake or in a long-term care home, L’eau du bain travels to create, leaving the black box behind to encounter new landscapes and characters. Based in Chelsea, Outaouais, the company draws its raw material from reality and shapes it into immersive worlds where fictional threads appear and dissolve.
L’eau du bain’s installations and theatrical works deploy a scenic and digital language in which sound and light are crafted to resonate within the inner body of the spectator—adult or child. With each creation, new rules of play are established and new machines invented. Community-based work is central to L’eau du bain’s practice and shapes it from within. They create with people of all ages and backgrounds, embracing differences and stepping beyond familiar territories.
In recent years, L’eau du bain has sought to expand its target audience by offering works that address both adults and children. Along this path, the company has presented the diptych White Out and La chambre des enfants (NAC, Carrefour, FTA), Solarium (Mois Multi, Big Bang! in Ottawa, Lille, Rouen, and Antwerp), and De glace (NAC).
The experiences they propose are more sensory than narrative, allowing for broad accessibility.
