On May 4, let yourself be swept away on a poetic journey inspired by water and discover how its many forms have fueled the imagination of composers Samuel Barber, Morten Lauridsen, Glenn McClure, Marie-Claire Saindon, and Andrew Staniland. Life-giving water, water that strikes and erodes, the original matrix, humanity’s eternal companion— its multifaceted nature is explored through works bursting with beauty, fluidity, and emotion.
Under the inspired direction of Tiphaine Legrand and accompanied by pianist Anthony Lampron, our choristers will transport you to a world where water reveals its profound symbolic and musical richness.
Among these works, Sister Water and The Wind and Rain by Glenn McClure hold a special place as they are part of The Water is Me project—an initiative that has given rise to a collection of musical works based on the sonification of scientific water data.
Sister Water, presented in world premiere, is based on data collected by scientists at the Lake Champlain Basin Project. This data describes water quality from the La Moyle river tributary into Lake Champlain as it pertains the rise and fall of water levels. The composer translates this data into music to communicate it in a new way, to engage the heart as well as the mind
The Wind and Rain, a Canadian premiere, is constructed from data collected from the depths of Lake Wolf - located in the heart of the Adirondacks - to understand the history of change over the millennia through geological strata.
Curious to learn more about this musical journey and the featured works? We invite you to watch the pre-concert talk, hosted in French by François Gauthier (Chez Gauthier, Unique FM 94.5), as he speaks with our conductor, Tiphaine Legrand, about the pieces that will be performed.
