About the Concert
HausMusique : Vaughan Williams
HausMusique invites you to discover two wonderful works of English chamber music, performed by five distinguished Canadian musicians, including special guest, JUNO award-winning double bassist Joel Quarrington.
English musical tradition had been dormant for centuries when composer Ralph Vaughan Williams began taking an interest in English folksong in the early 20th century. Vaughan Williams assimilated the characteristic melodiousness of these folk songs, and created a new musical language which has inspired English composers ever since.
His early Piano Quintet is full of vigour, overflowing with sweeping melodies and lush harmony. It is notable for its inclusion of the double bass, adding a unique depth of colour to the music.
Herbert Howells was deeply influenced by the music of Vaughan Williams. Now mostly known for his choral music, his Piano Quartet, written when he was only 24, contains all the best features of the English style – bold expression, lyrical tenderness, and jovial vitality.
Musicians
Emily Kruspe, violin
Isaac Chalk, viola
Cameron Crozman, cello
Joel Quarrington, bass
Carson Becke, piano
Programme
Herbert Howells – Piano Quartet in a minor, op. 21
Ralph Vaughan Williams – Piano Quintet in c minor
⏳ The concert will last approximately 60 minutes.
Seating is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to your concert, you can make a dinner reservation at the Ile-de-France restaurant, with a meal prepared by renowned chefs Derek Dammann and Liam Hopkins. Reserve here.
On the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5 PM, we invite the public to enjoy a glass during the concerts, meet the artists, and book at the 9e Île-de-France restaurant for post-concert dinner.
