About the Concert
HausMusique : Trio Hélios Trio Hélios, one of France's most exciting new-generation piano trios, embarks on its North American debut tour. Their program spans a vast emotional range from Beethoven to Shostakovich.
Beethoven composed the “Ghost” Trio in 1808 while struggling with his state of near-complete deafness. The nickname of this work comes from his student Carl Czerny, in reference to the ghost-like, desolate writing of the slow middle movement (which was perhaps a depiction of the three witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth!). The darkness of the Ghost Trio’s centerpiece - described as “gothic gloom on the grandest possible scale” - is counterbalanced by the highly energetic
This contrast of dark and light is also heard in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio, a piece which emerged from tragedy and loss resulting from the Second World War. Mourning his friend Ivan Sollertinsky and other war victims, the work carries both personal grief and the dark shadows of history. The finale notably draws upon a Jewish folk theme, its spectral dance tinged with irony and defiance – music that Shostakovich would echo once more in his Eighth String Quartet, dedicated “to the victims of war and fascism.”
