Joan Mitchell fut l'une des plus grandes peintres américaines de l'après-guerre, faisant partie du mouvement de l’expressionnisme abstrait. Acclamée par la critique et le public, sa posture lui permis d’être l'une des rares femmes à s'imposer dans le monde de l'art abstrait, alors dominé par les hommes. Elle fut d’ailleurs la première femme à avoir une exposition personnelle au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, en 1982.

Joan Mitchell was one of the greatest American painters of the post-war era and a figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Acclaimed by both critics and the public, her stance enabled her to become one of the few women to establish herself in the abstract art world—a realm then dominated by men. Notably, she was the first woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, in 1982.
