Gérard Dansereau

A bachelor in graphic design, Gérard Dansereau has continued his work as a painter alongside his career as a graphic designer for nearly 50 years.

A lover of color, shapes, and textures, Dansereau is particularly noted for the creation of his famous feline, the cat Kat Mandou, which appears in several of his works. The painter also developed an impressive series of abstract works, which take us to the confines of an enigmatic universe.

In one of his articles on Gérard Dansereau, Robert Bernier writes that "Dansereau's painting is off the beaten track, both in its form and language and in its position in the visual arts." His practice demonstrates a fruitful multidisciplinarity. In his work, elements such as color schemes, contrasts, and textures are combined with inscriptions of letters, images, or fragments of text. Influenced by American Pop Art, Dansereau does not hesitate to integrate signs, personal notes, and borrowings from popular culture to construct his own visual language.

As a graphic designer and illustrator, he worked with distinction in the world of graphic communications, both in publishing and advertising. He also taught graphic and visual arts at Collège Ahuntsic. The Gérard Dansereau Prize now exists to recognize excellence in illustration by a college student. He himself has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Coq D'or from the Publicité-Club for Hergé in Montreal. A highlight of his career was the creation of astronaut Julie Payette's official emblem in 1999.

With the vitality we know, always the same dynamism, always the same strength, always the same intensity of color.
