Bach and Baroque’s upcoming concert is consecrated entirely to works by J.S. Bach.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the great reformer Martin Luther introduced assembly singing, composing about 40 chorales. By Bach's time, a corpus of more than a thousand chorales was available to the Lutheran faithful. Recognizing the importance of congregational singing in worship, Bach made extensive use of his favorite chorales when composing the large choruses of his cantatas.

The centerpiece of our concert is Bach’s Easter cantata BWV4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in the bonds of death), all movements of which will be sung by the choir. Based on 7 verses by Luther, it was composed when Bach was 23. By then, Bach had already established himself as the greatest composer of his time.

A series of festive Latin motets, based on Bach’s cantatas arranged by our conductor, round out the program.

Bach and Baroque will be accompanied by a baroque flautist and string ensemble.
