Today Iberia belongs to two countries, Spain and Portugal. In the Middle Ages it was home to many different cultures and kingdoms, including some under Muslim rule, where Iberia was known as Al Andalus. Muslim culture exerted an important influence on Iberian music and poetry, and in many other spheres. In this concert, Ensemble Scholastica and special guest Lamia Yared will present selections from two of the most important medieval Iberian repertoires: the celebrated Cantigas de Santa Maria with their many tales of astounding miracles; and muwashahat from some of the great Andalusian poets. This concert will feature six singers accompanying themselves on an array of period instruments.
