La Chorale Saint-Jean
Chorale Saint-Jean | Biographie musicale

Chorale Saint-Jean | Musical Biography
"Proud of its Francophone heritage, Chorale Saint-Jean is a unifying force characterized by its musical excellence and the transformative nature of its sound." Guided by the essence of this vision since 1937, Chorale Saint-Jean of Campus Saint-Jean at the University of Alberta plays a leading role in developing the legacy of francophone choral singing outside the province of Quebec.
Led since 1995 by Laurier Fagnan, the ensemble has gained a national reputation for its magnificent sound and passionate musical interpretations. Its repertoire ranges from a cappella sacred songs to classical works with orchestra, Afro-American spirituals and traditional songs from various cultures. Recognizing that choral singing must consistently renew itself to remain relevant to a culture, the ensemble has commissioned over thirty original pieces from Canadian composers and has released eight albums.
Chorale Saint-Jean has received the Prix Eugène-Trottier and the Prix Impact from the French-Canadian Association of Alberta (ACFA) for its contribution to its community, as well as the Award of Distinction from the City of Edmonton Hall of Fame. The 2008 documentary Le chœur d’une culture (“Together in Harmony”), produced by the National Film Board, highlights the choir's role in promoting the Francophone community outside of Quebec through choral music.
Chorale Saint-Jean's most prestigious performances include two tours of Quebec in 2005 and 2008. During Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations, the choir's voices joined those of 1,400 choristers gathered to mark this major event. In July 2011, the choir was honoured to perform in several French cities, including Lyon and Paris, where it sang before 3,000 people in the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral. Chorale Saint-Jean hosted the Choralies Internationales Edmonton 2012. This festival attracted hundreds of choristers and conductors from the Francophone world. In May 2016, it presented a concert as part of the national Podium festival. In July 2017, it participated in the Unisong festival in Ottawa to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary with choirs from all corners of the country. In the spring of 2018, the choir performed at Carnegie Hall in New York with the New England Symphonic Ensemble and three other Canadian choirs for a performance of Dan Forrest's Requiem for the Living under the direction of Laurier Fagnan. In the summer of 2024, the choir went on tour throughout French 'Acadie' where it performed Elles s'appelaient Marie. This universal story touched many hearts and resonated with the Acadians and their history. In May of 2026, the choir will travel to Victoria where it will represent Western Canada’s francophonie at Podium 2026, Canada’s national choral festival.
The choir remains proud of its motto and raison d'être: “Our choir, your voice”, uniting its voices to continue singing the beauty of the world ‘en français’.
