Before travelling across the Americas, before being embraced in Burkina Faso and Mali by village griots, and even before being given the name “Gato Negro” by Andalusian gypsies, the Black Cat was born in the rough-and-ready sound systems of Toulouse, France.
Today, El Gato Negro is going back to those roots, this time on his own.
All by himself at the turntables, on vocals, flute, and synths, the MC with a thousand stories to tell gets the crowd going with his sharp, catchy tunes, honed along the way.
His music is energetic, hypnotic and deeply rooted in his travels and encounters around the world.
But at the heart of the project are the words.
El Gato Negro is first and foremost a songwriter. His lyrics are written in French — poetic, raw, playful and deeply human — drawing from travel, love, family, street life, freedom and the stories of people he has met along the way.
His French-language writing is an essential part of his identity: a way of telling stories from one side of the world while making them resonate somewhere completely different..
