BRAZIL BEYOND Bossa Nova
A 6- and 7-string violinist, flamenco guitarist, arranger, and musical director, Fábio Nin also plays the viola caipira (Brazilian country guitar). He received the 2008 Shell Theater Award for Best Musical Direction. A co-founding member of the band Tira Poeira, which has been nominated for numerous awards, he revolutionized the choro scene in Rio in the 2000s. He is currently a member of the Camerata de Violões (8 guitars) and has participated in various theater productions as a musician and/or musical director, contributed to film soundtracks, and recorded numerous CDs and DVDs.
A singer originally from Minas Gerais who now lives in Rio de Janeiro, Cynthia Shirm is also a cultural producer. She grew up in Belo Horizonte, surrounded by the harmonies and poetry of Clube da Esquina, the festivals and popular events of Minas Gerais, and the power of Sepultura’s rock music, which has profoundly shaped the city’s cultural identity. At the same time, from a very young age, she was exposed to traditional and folk music from different regions of the world, broadening her musical horizons beyond borders and genres. This diversity of influences is reflected in her singing style and the way she builds her repertoires. Her voice travels between different poetic styles, rhythms, and sonic landscapes, revealing the myriad possibilities of Brazilian music in constant flux.
