“Nesraf” is a rhythmic and melodic style in Chaabi and Andalusian music. The term means “departure” and refers to the people who have immigrated over the years. It is thanks to them that this cultural heritage has been sung, shared, and passed down to this day in every corner of the world.
The group Nesraf, composed of several musicians and singers, is the culmination of about a decade of friendship and artistic collaborations. Together, they share a great passion: “Chaâbi music.” The group had the opportunity to come together during its participation in the 24th edition of the Maghreb Music Festival (Nuits d’Afrique).
This musical style, pioneered by none other than the illustrious El Hadj Mohamed El Anka—who popularized it in the early 1930s—is the quintessential form of Algerian folk music. It is the music of the streets, cafés, and ceremonies.
Whether in Algerian Arabic or Kabyle, the group Nesraf reinterprets chaâbi classics, adding diverse arrangements and sounds; in this way, with each performance, they take us on a musical journey rich in rhythms and melodies.
