Former singer with Olodum, the famous band (which has collaborated with Michael Jackson, Jimmy Cliff, and Paul Simon, ed.) familiar with the blocos, Mateus Vidal is a “key artist in the fusion of samba and reggae, a trend that began in northeastern Brazil” (PanM360, 2024). Now based in Montreal, the charismatic composer, musician, and singer with an infectious smile continues to promote the sounds of the Bahia Carnival, deeply rooted in Afro-Brazilian tradition. His Axé music, a vibrant pop variation of samba-reggae, which finds its essence in percussive rhythms, encapsulates all the positive vibes of Brazil at the end of the 20th century.
