"My white twin!" exclaimed the kora legend, Toumani Diabaté, upon hearing the transposition of his pieces on classical guitar. Derek Gripper embarked on an artistic journey: adapting the rich and complex chords of the majestic 21-string African harp onto a six-string guitar. With the utmost respect for the instrument and its traditions, he achieved this feat, delivering a breathtaking tribute to the incredible legacy of Manding music. After unforgettable performances at the 2022 Nuits d'Afrique International Festival and at Balattou in 2023, Derek returns to Montreal directly from Cape Town, South Africa, for an intimate concert at Balattou on April 25.
