Originating on the outskirts of Oran, Raï is one of Algeria's leading musical genres. The word rai means opinion. Gasba was initially formed when two Montreal musicians (guitarist Rafik Abdeladim and bassist Yassine Aissa El Bey) got together around the same idea: to revitalise the Montreal arts scene by sharing this music. They were later joined by Amine Koudeche (singer), Ahmed Kaouane (keyboardist), Youva Ouaneche (percussionist) and Sylvain Plante (drummer). This musical project is defined as a link between tradition and modernity. The Guesba group's music is a blend of typically Rai sounds with other musical styles such as rock, flamenco and reggae.
