“Their music is a joyful mix of flavours, at times sweet, bitter, spicy and even downright hot. Their Creole lyrics brim with curry, rougail and massalé.” (RFI Musique, 2020 [translation]). Formed in 1999, Lindigo is a flagship Maloya band. A testament to the resilience of those originally brought over as slaves from Madagascar and East Africa, Maloya has been inscribed on the Representative List Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Guided by the seductive rhythms of traditional Roulèr and kayamb instruments, the music that Olivier Araste’s group plays is a true call to celebration that brings people of all ages together, keeping Maloya music very much alive.
