“The Soul in her voice and music, the Creole in her soul mix naturally” (Le Devoir, 2016 [translation]), Senaya illuminates the stage, fiercely and magnificently free. Inspired by activist poets Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor, as well as such greats as Billie Holliday and Nina Simone, this guitar-playing, singer-songwriter and composer, who earned a Canada Council for the Arts grant, deftly blends African and Caribbean rhythms with jazz, funk, blues, folk, R&B and traditional spirituals into her SoûlKreôl.
