It is in the breath of their voices that everything takes shape. Like a time machine, a burst of sound transports us to a past rich in culture. A Quebec-based a cappella group specializing in the research and performance of the oral tradition repertoire, Les Charbonniers have been setting the stage ablaze for over 30 years, lighting up performance venues across Quebec and Europe.

Following the passing of their longtime collaborator and partner Jean-Claude Mirandette (the fifth Charbonniers de l’enfer) on April 12, 2019, the group now consists of four experienced singers—Michel Bordeleau, Michel Faubert, André Marchand, and Normand Miron. The originality of their approach is marked by their ability to update their repertoire, which simultaneously ensures the continuity of a sung heritage, as the rhythm of the voices is accompanied by the tapping of feet.

“Somewhere between traditional singing and impromptu barbershop groups (with a hint of Corsican polyphony), it sounds like nothing else but Les Charbonniers. It is both an extension of ancestral traditions and a true collective creation. To borrow the analogy from science fiction series, it’s song rooted in space. Intergalactic turlutes. Earthiness in zero gravity.”

- Sylvain Cormier, Le Devoir
