Toto De la Ossa returns with his quartet to take us on a musical journey that will begin with a first set of original compositions from his project “Songs from Within.” This series of pieces moves between hard bop and modern jazz, reflecting the musical maturity he has gained through his experiences as a guitarist and composer in Montreal.

The highlight of the evening will come with the appearance of the magnificent singer Charlotte Van Dyke-Talbot, who will invoke the spirit of the “High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone, bringing back classics such as Baltimore, Feeling Good, and I Put a Spell on You through Toto De la Ossa’s original arrangements — an unprecedented encounter between jazz and soul.

DelaOssa Quartet

Toto De la Ossa is a guitarist and singer who completed his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance at McGill University last December. During his studies, he focused on his latest musical project titled “Songs from Within.” This collection of songs, presented in a quartet format, is the result of Toto De la Ossa’s experiences and encounters in Montreal. It embodies the aesthetics of modern jazz, with influences from hard bop, funk, and traditional music from his native Colombia.

His closeness to soul and other popular styles of American music has sparked in Toto a curiosity to explore the reinterpretation of some classics from these genres through the lens of modern jazz. This is how the idea was born to create a tribute to the “High Priestess of Soul,” featuring original arrangements that will bring Nina’s most remembered classics to life as never heard before.
