DUO BEZ IME
Master accordionist Petar Ralchev, known internationally as one of the greatest ambassadors for Bulgarian traditional music, has joined forces with the young and talented accordionist Sergiu Popa for this new project. Sergiu, a native of Moldova now based in Montreal, Canada cites Petar as one of his major sources of inspiration and enjoyed the opportunity of meeting him in person for the first time at the Carrefour Mondial de l’accordéon à Montmagny, Quebec in 2009 and again in 2011. The idea of an accordion duo took shape during Sergiu’s recent visit with Petar in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in early 2018.
A ‘musical chameleon’, Sergiu Popa has absorbed a wide range of influences from Montreal’s extremely active and diverse world music scene during the 15 years since his arrival. He incorporates these into his own virtuostic improvisations, based on an in-depth knowledge of Eastern European traditional music. Now, he inspires his mentor to indulge his own curiosity and together, they are expanding the vocabulary of this instrument of seemingly endless possibilities. The repertoire of BEZ IME ('nameless' in Bulgarian) consists of the duo’s unique interpretations of classic accordion styles, in addition to selections from Petar’s vast body of compositions, arranged for two.
