Originally practiced by former black slaves for therapeutic purposes, gnawa rituals have been nurtured over the centuries by African animist cults, Berber beliefs and Islamic spirituality. Though this musical style has more of a “world” aspect nowadays, it remains rooted in a tradition that is alive and well!
