THE WOMEN’S ORCHESTRA OF CHEIKH SADEK BEJAOUI

Ahbab Cheikh Sadek Bejaoui Association
(Algeria)

Canadian première / Exclusive broadcast for the 21st FMA

Reviving the golden age of a mythical Andalusia and the nostalgia of togetherness, the Women’s Orchestra of the Ahbab Cheikh Sadek Bejaoui Association has set out to be the guardian of the temple of Andalusian heritage and the distinguished ambassador of a highly refined body of music that took root in the garden of delights of a pluralistic Spain.

This women’s orchestra is first and foremost a musical venture started by ten young students from Béjaïa, a coastal city in Algeria’s Kabylia region, driven by a passionate desire to immerse their audiences in the magical world of Andalusian tarab and its Algerian variants. At the initiative of its president, Rochdy Bouyahia, a son of Sheik Sadek El Bejaoui, the association created the women’s orchestra in 2008 under the direction of Sheik M’hamed Shebaim. These young women took up the bold challenges of forming one of the earliest women’s orchestras specializing in Algerian traditional music and performing abroad.

Inspired by the rich body of work by Sheik Sadek El Bejaoui, especially by his Haouzi, Kabyle and Medh poems, of which the best known are “A ya khti,” “Ya Fares Zor Bejaia” and “Ksentina tsewsel ya hmam,” the orchestra has set itself the mission of promoting, popularizing and conveying the subtle delights of this learned music as well as introducing a universal and modern dimension.

An unforgettable foray into the musical world of this outstanding 100% female group that brings a wind of renewal to a heritage that has become eternal!
