Canadian première / Exclusive broadcast for the 21st FMA
(Tunisia)

Intoxicated by the mystical fervour of Sufi poetry, the show Lemkhaznya Hadhrou will delight spectators and convey them to the dancing celestial gardens, ecstatically lighting up the immeasurable love of the Divine. This gives the Montreal public a unique opportunity to discover and experience an eternal form of music that appeals to every age and culture. The Sufi Ensemble of the El Makhzen cultural association is offering a velvety journey that invites each listener to explore the deepest spiritual emotions and to inhale the exquisite fragrance of the Almighty’s lofty garden.

Sufi ritual consists of evoking the Divine through the rhythmic repetition of “His Name.” This is a prayer of the heart with litanies that are sung by the members of the fellowship. The words and gestures are repeated jerkily to attain the spiritual emancipation of the soul and to reach divine unity. The very essence of this sacred music lies in the ecstatic singing of poems with the use of various maqams (traditional melodic modes). Each piece is a semi-improvised reciting of poetry that suggests and provides various hals (“states”) to the audience. With lyrics and chants by the great names of Sufism and contemporary compositions written specifically for the occasion, this show, presented by more than 40 musicians and singers, is led by the outstanding Mohamed Ali Ben Jemaa, artistic director and creator of the project, and Adel Bondka, musical director. The mix of traditional and western classical instruments, the staging that stands out with its captivating theatrical style and the modernity that emanates from the costumes give this show an inspiration unique in the world of Sufi sacred music.

Come and imbibe from the infinite source of Divine Love. Savour the chants in a religious silence, let go of yourself for a while and discover a profoundly learned and mystical world. You don’t need to be Arab or Persian to enjoy it. If your heart is ready, the ecstasy of the Sufis will dwell inside you, an ecstasy that calls upon the sublime and the harmonious!
