The Music Department at Bishop’s University is pleased to present Duo MacDonald-Picard as part of the 2022-2023 Musique Chez Nous Series on Friday, January 27, at 8 p.m. in Bandeen Hall. Retired Bishop’s University music professor, guitarist and composer Andrew Paul MacDonald performs with Sherbrooke pianist, Carmen Picard for an evening of transcriptions and original compositions and features the premiere performance of Dr. MacDonald’s Electric Pleasures, Op. 90a composed between 2017 and 2021.

  

The program also includes Sonata in D major, BWV 1028 - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - arr. by A. P. MacDonald; Sonata (1926) - Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948); Embraceable You, Fascinating Rhythm, Summertime - George Gershwin (1898-1937) - arr. A. P. MacDonald.

 

Carmen Picard is a renowned pianist on the Montreal scene and across Canada as a specialist in chamber music repertoire. Currently, she participates in projects with guitarist and composer Andrew McDonald and is involved in the creative process with young composers.

 

In addition, she is Chair of the Board of Directors for the “Concours de musique du Québec et du Canada” (CMC-CANIMEX). Founder of the competition “Cégep en concert” in 2014, she devotes her passion for music to the development of new talent and the growth of emerging musicians in Quebec and Canada.

 

Andrew Paul MacDonald was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2021 for his lifetime achievements in composition and performance. Commissioned by outstanding orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists, music competitions, radio networks, and opera companies, his works are broadcast on CBC and Société Radio-Canada and performed around the globe. Thirty-five of his compositions have been recorded on twenty albums to date. MacDonald is also a concert guitarist and recently retired as Professor of Theory and Composition at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Québec.
