Singer-songwriter Marie-Jo Thério puts on shows that vary depending on the venue, offering unique experiences every time. Known for her unique and distinctive stage presence, seeing this Moncton-born artist perform is an extraordinary experience. She performs with passion and originality, in a uniquely artistic style. That’s why her return to the stage, after a hiatus of several years, delights everyone who attends her shows. Faced with such originality, audiences and critics are unanimous: despite the passing years, her songs stand the test of time with panache. What mark does time leave on La Maline? She is not defined by the age on a calendar or the natural process of aging. She bears only the mark of humanity and timelessness.

Marie-Jo Thério

Born on July 3, 1965, in Shédiac, New Brunswick, Marie-Jo Thério grew up in Moncton, where she began learning piano at a very young age. At age 16, she staged her first show in her hometown, then left Acadia for Montreal a year later to study literature and theater.

Noticed by playwright Michel Tremblay, she landed the role of Gertrude, Émile Nelligan’s sister, in the romantic opera dedicated to the poet, which he was developing with André Gagnon. The production won the Show of the Year award at the ADISQ gala.

Subsequently, Marie-Jo played the role of Laura in the highly popular TV drama Chambres en ville and also appeared in several musicals, including Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris.

In 1995, she recorded her debut album, Comme de la musique, followed by a stage show and a tour. In 1997, she met Georges Moustaki at the Quebec City Summer Festival, who invited her to open for him at the Casino de Paris.

In 1999, she starred in the social drama Full Blast by Acadian filmmaker Rodrigue Jean. Her performance earned her the Jutra Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2000, at her “cabin in Verchères,” she recorded the album La Maline with Bernard Falaise and Erik West Millet. This second album was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike and was followed by a tour. In 2001, she met Olivier Bloch-Lainé; this collaboration resulted in the album Les Matins habitables.

The double album Chasing Lydie, a true “musical road movie,” released in April 2011, follows in the footsteps of a great-aunt who was a singer and immigrated to the United States in the 1920s.

The live album Trois petits tours d’automne, recorded over three evenings with three different improvisational musicians each night, was released in the fall of 2014.

In 2020, she released a reissue of La Maline and a live recording of the show Un trois août at the Spectrum in Montreal.

In 2023 and 2024, Marie-Jo Thério returned to the stage with the show La Maline, 20 ans et quelques lunes.
