A figure to discover

Joe Beef, whose real name was Charles McKiernan (1835–1889), was an Irish immigrant and former British soldier who became one of the most famous figures of 19th-century working-class Montréal.

Settling near the port, he opened a tavern around 1869 that was frequented by dockworkers, sailors, and port laborers. Renowned for his imposing stature, his outspokenness, and his generosity toward the most destitute, he even fed those who couldn’t afford to pay, his very name became synonymous with a figure of popular solidarity.

Straddling the line between historical reality and legend, Joe Beef embodies the Montréal of the docks, labor struggles, and Irish immigration, becoming over time a symbol of the people standing up to the powerful.
