What if chivalry never really died out?
Drawing on some of the objects presented in the Knights exhibition, this lecture traces the history and heritage of chivalry, from its medieval origins to orders of chivalry in contemporary Québec.
Along the way, meet leading figures of New France, such as Chevalier Louis-Hector de Callière, after whom the Museum is named. Learn about the surprising coexistence of two chivalric traditions: that of nobility passed down from father to son and that of conferred orders of chivalry, such as the Royal Order of Saint-Louis or the Military-Religious Order of Malta, to which Charles Huault de Montmagny belonged.
This lecture addresses a tradition as complex as it is enduring… one that remains very much alive today. An invitation to examine chivalry in a new light!
Lecturers
Arnaud Montreuil, professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Université du Québec in Chicoutimi.
Alexandre Dubé, professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Université du Québec in Chicoutimi, where he teaches the history of Canada, New France, and the Atlantic world.
