Gentiane MG was always attracted by music as a very powerful and vital means of expression. While studying classical piano as a child, she was already drawn to composition, often exploring ways of playing music by ear and inventing variations on the pieces she had to learn. Later on, studying jazz and improvised music gave her the means to find her own voice through composition, finding inspiration through introspection. Her music comes from the tradition of improvised jazz with colours from impressionistic and romantic classical music that come together in a deeply personal universe.

“ My most recent repertoire is composed of music for piano trio inspired by a recent change in my perception of the world outside myself. I started to feel the power of life through objects, animals, plants and sounds in a way that I had never truly been able to before. Their ephemeral quality became apparent to me, momentarily creating tangible magic, profoundness, beauty, and meaning. Music has an incredibly strong power to keep moments alive from reality that are long gone, reflecting their beauty into the world endlessly. And I believe that meaning, wherever one can find it, no matter how small or insignificant, has to be shared in order to make the world a better place. “

Gentiane MG’s trio is composed of bassist Levi Dover and drummer Louis-Vincent Hamel, with whom she has released two albums - Eternal Cycle (Arté Boréal 2017) and Wonderland (Effendi 2019) and has toured extensively in Quebec, Canada and Mexico. MG has received several awards for her work with her trio, including the François Marcaurelle de la GMMQ Award in 2017, the Radio-Canada Jazz Award in 2018 and the OPUS Award: Discovery of the Year in 2020.
