English choral traditions that are the envy of Europe today have their roots in the medieval period. Unfortunately, most of the manuscripts containing medieval English music were lost over time, often as a result of political and religious upheaval. The surviving fragments provide evidence of a thriving sacred musical culture and a medieval English style rich in counterpoint and colour. The nine women’s voices of Ensemble Scholastica, accompanied by two guest musicians, Sara Lackie (harp) and Annette Bauer (recorder), will perform this sumptuous repertoire in one of Montréal’s best acoustics for vocal polyphony.
