Two books drawn directly from lived experience have ended up on the world’s biggest cinematic stage. Ariana Harwicz and Marcelo Rubens Paiva come together to talk about what happens when intensely personal writing is taken up by cinema — and then by the Academy Awards.
Harwicz’s fiction, written from extreme psychological states and described by The Guardian as having a David Lynch-like intensity, was adapted into the film Die My Love (2025), driven by unease rather than realism. Jennifer Lawrence, who stars in the adaptation of Harwicz’s book, is currently nominated for Best Actress.
Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s Ainda Estou Aqui, written out of his family’s confrontation with dictatorship, disappearance, and survival, was adapted into the film of the same name (I’m Still Here), released in 2024. From testimony to international recognition, the film won Best International Feature last year, with its lead, Fernanda Torres, also nominated for Best Actress.
