Alabama-born writer Brandon Taylor’s debut novel, Real Life, was shortlisted for the UK’s Booker Prize, the US National Book Critics Circle Award and was a NY Times Book Review Editors’ Choice. The central character, from Alabama, is the only Black student in his graduate program in bio-chemistry at a midwestern university. Here he encounters racism and struggles with his own desire to escape his past. Taylor’s work is frankly autobiographical but it’s not memoir.

Taylor himself later left his scientific studies to get a Master’s degree from the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop. His latest novel, Minor Black Figures, is a vivid portrait of friendship, creativity and desire set in the New York art world. In his writing, there is a depth of experience and awareness, alongside the sheer beauty of his prose. Taylor is also an engaging literary critic and wide-ranging enthusiast, especially of Mavis Gallant (and recently, Emile Zola). Brandon Taylor will be in Montreal, in conversation with Eleanor Wachtel. This event is part of the Blue Metropolis Eleanor Wachtel Series.
