Critic, translator, essayist and gay man, Édouard Roditi (1910-1992) had Sephardic Jewish ancestors of Greek, Spanish and Italian origin on his father’s side and Catholic and Ashkenazi Jewish connections on his mother’s. Born in Paris, he was published in transition at eighteen and The Criterion in his early tweinties, served as an interpreter at the Nuremberg trials, and was a highly regarded literary translator and essayist on the literature, art, and politics of his time. Édouard Roditi represents the quintessence of the cosmopolitan spirit in the world of twentieth-century culture and history, and invites the question : Is cosmopolitanism an art form?
