Ice fishing is an age-old fishing technique taught to the French settlers by the Indigenous people. Today it is an established tradition. Ice fishing lasts only a few weeks during winter when the ice is thick enough to cross safely and erect huts on it. These cabins, which are almost like little cottages, provide shelter from adverse weather. Each one is heated (by burning wood), lit, and equipped with at least one electrical outlet and has tables, chairs, benches, and more. Depending on their size, they can accommodate from 6 to 15 people.

Fishing
Atlantic tomcod (commonly known as Tommy Cod) is a white-fleshed fish 15 to 30 cm in length commonly found in the cold waters of eastern North America.Tomcod fishing is very simple. Just lower your baited line into the river and wait for the fish to take the bait. Once you’ve caught a fish, reel it in without leaving the comfort of the hut. If you wish to spice up the day, cook your fish right on the site over the wood stoves.To do so, you must bring all the necessary equipment. If you want to cook the caught fish, you can bring your pans, ustensils and everything you need to prepare it on the stove of your shack.

The location
The activity will take place in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, where an entire village of more than 500 huts are put up each year on the Sainte-Anne River. There is a skating rink on the river. Bring you own skates!

When: Friday January 24th 2020. Departure at 1 p.m. from Université Laval, between Ernest-Lemieux and Alphonse-Desjardins buildings. Return to the same location a little after 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $25, including transportation, access to a hut, unlimited baits, entry to the Tomcod Theme Center and the skating rink (bring your own skates). Fishing equipment is provided and ready to use.

Meal: You can bring your own lunch, beverages, and snacks. There are many restaurants located near the ice village, and some even deliver on the ice. If you want to cook the caught fish, you can bring your pans and everything you need and prepare it on the stove of your shack. Bring water with you, there is no drinking water on the site.

Equipment: Bring a towel to wipe your hands and plastic bags to bring back your fish.

Attire: It is winter, so dress warmly! Consider wearing multiple layers so you will be comfortable both outside and inside as the huts are heated and can quickly overheat.

Registration: Register online before Tuesday January 21st at 4:30 p.m. (credit card only) or in person at the Orientation Lounge, room 2470 of the Alphonse-Desjardins building, until Friday January 17th at 5 p.m. (cash only). From Monday January 20th to Tuesday January 21st at 4:30 p.m, please go to the Bureau de la vie étudiante, room 2344 of the Alphonse-Desjardins building.
