Two instrumentalist composers come together to create an original repertoire at the crossroads of the two different musical traditions. Nazih Borish, a Syrian musician based in Montreal, is a self-taught oud virtuoso; Gabriel Evangelista, a Montrealer of Spanish origin, is a flamenco-jazz pianist. Both had developed their own musical language over the course of their careers. They are involved in this artistic encounter by combining their cultural and personal horizons.

- The concerts start at 6 p.m. and last about 60 minutes

Business Hours
Nazih Borish
Self-taught musician Nazih Borish was born in Latakia (Syria) where he founded an oud school that has been attended by more than a hundred students over the years. An indefatigably curious and versatile musician, he draws his inspiration from Arabic music, flamenco, blues and jazz, developing a highly personal style of playing that is now emulated by oud players around the world. In 2016, he moved to Canada, where he now pursues a career as a performer and composer. Nazih recently performed with such ensembles as Constantinople (Quebec), the Canadian Arabic Orchestra (Ontario) and the Rouh Trio (Jordan), and has taken part in artistic residencies at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (Culturally INappropriate, 2018, 2019) and the Centre des musiciens du monde (Nazih Borish’s Log, 2018). He is regularly invited to collaborate with artists in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and has served as a judge and special guest at international oud competitions.
Gabriel Evangelista
Gabriel Evangelista is a composer, arranger, bandleader, pianist, percussionist and educator based in Montreal, Canada. He holds a bachelor's degree in Composition from Université de Montréal, a bachelor's degree in Jazz Piano from Concordia University, and Gamelan Gong Kebyar training in Bali. His latest original productions include AFILAO's EP "Macizo", a cuban Jazz septet, and Acumen's eponymous album, a Jazz trio. He instigated and co-directed Giri Kedaton's "Projet Bali X", an original album fusing Gamelan Gong Kebyar to various musical styles. He has collaborated as a composer, arranger, and performer in a variety of awarded ensembles including OktoEcho, Willy Rios, Impulso Flamenco and Lengaia Salsa Brava. He won the "Arranger or Producer of the year" prize at the 2018 Canada Latin Awards. He teaches piano and musical theory privately, and has taught Gamelan Gong Kebyar at Université de Montréal and Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.
