ABSINTHE & COMPAGNIE - CLASSICAL MUSIC
The Absinthe Ensemble invites its virtual audience to an intimate concert of chamber music for string quintet with piano. It will consist mainly of music from the Romantic era, but there will also be a short contemporary piece, packed with entertaining rhythms and humour. For the occasion, pianist Anna Levy and cellist Zoltan Rozsnyai will join the regular Absinthe trio, which consists of a violin, a viola and a contrabass. The “pièce de résistance” of the program is the Schubert quintet called “Die Forella” or “The Trout”, inspired by the Lied for solo voice and piano of the same name. The musicians will also perform a very beautiful quintet—much less known today but popular in the 19th century—by the French composer Louise Farrenc. A suite of six charming jazzy vignettes by the Canadian composer Victor Davies will close the performance.
Repertoire
Franz Schubert (Austria, 1797 - 1828): Quintet in A minor, D. 667 “The Trout”
Allegro vivace, Andante, Presto, Andantino - allegretto (theme and variations), Allegro giusto.
Louise Farrenc (France, 1804 - 1875): Quintet for Piano No. 1 in A minor opus 30
Allegro, Adagio non troppo, Scherzo (presto), Finale (allegro)
Victor Davies (Canada, 1939 - ): The Colours of Jazz
Sweet Swing, 2. In the Alley, 3. Crazy Rags, 4. Midnight Melancholy, 5. Bebop Fiction, 6. Blues for Philly
