Rabindranath Tagore the poet, philosopher, educator, composer, and much more was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in literature for his book Gitanjali or the “Song offeringsin 1913. In this program we celebrate the life and works of this polymath. We take a fresh look at Gitanjali or the “Song Offerings”. We trace the progress of Gitanjali’s English renderings from the formative stage to its ultimate outcome of winning the Nobel Prize. Among his vocations, Tagore had a special feeling towards his music and embraced different genres of music whole heartedly. He chose from a vast array of world music starting from ancient Indian Dhrupad to Italian Opera to Folk tunes of Bengal to Carnatic music styles to Scottish and Irish folk tunes and composed songs which carried the indelible touch of Tagore’s originality. We attempt to highlight the origin and the inspired Tagore song side by side in our presentation. We also highlight Tagore’s friendship with some of the greatest minds in the world like Mahatma Gandhi and Albert Einstein. Tagore was also extremely affectionate towards the rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and we take a glimpse at their relationship as well.
