The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of Beginnings and endings in C. Join the SSO and Artistic and Executive Director William Rowson and special guests Duo46 for the Season Finale. Please note that this concert was originally scheduled May 4th, 2024 at the Fraser Auditorium, refunds have been issued to Subscribers and ticket holders.
The program begins with an Overture form one of Mozart's last Operas La clemenza di Tito. The balance of the first act features Duo46, a violin and guitar ensemble comprising of Sudbury Symphony Music Conservatory (SSMC) faculty Beth Ilana Schneider-Gould, violin and Matt Gould, guitar. Beth, an instructor with the SSMC also sits as the SSO's Concert Master. Matt, also an instructor, serves as director of the SSMC. The program ends with Ludwig Van Bettoven's symphonic debut, the Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21.
The selections on the program showcase Beth and Matt's mastery of the classic and modern styles with the Baroque Concerto for Violin and Guitar in A Major by Bolognese master Guiseppe Torelli. Beth and Matt are important advocates of contemporary art music including the Histoire de Tango composed in 1985 by Ástor Piazzolla.
Beth and Matt's recordings and performances celebrate new chamber music for guitar often composed specifically for them. Their intriguing mix of music depicts the impressions and experiences of modern-day composers, capturing an array of style and emotion with a library of literally hundreds of original twentieth-century works for violin and guitar duo Double Concertos, and Trios with Cello, Mandolin (B.A.M.), Piano (the Strung Out Trio), and Viola.
The program concludes with Beethoven’s exuberant and uplifting Symphony No. 1. Written in 1801, it marked a new beginning for the composer. While clearly indebted to Beethoven's predecessors, particularly his teacher Joseph Haydn as well as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, it nonetheless has characteristics that mark it as uniquely Beethoven, giving us a glimpse of the great symphonies to come.

William Rowson is the newly appointed Artistic and Executive Director of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. Bill, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Toronto is hailed as one of Canada’s most compelling and versatile young artists for his work with orchestras across Canada.
Bill, his wife and two daughters plan to make Sudbury their home in the 2024-25 season and beyond.
Bill will continue to serve as Music Director of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra where he was part of a team that brought the orchestra through COVID and built this Orchestra back to capacity audiences and balanced books.
The highlights of Bill's career so far are numerous and include composing and recording the orchestral soundtrack to the feature length film ‘Brotherhood’ in 2020. William's guest conducting highlights include appearances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, the London Classical Soloists (UK), the Regina Symphony, and the Victoria Symphony, as well as return engagements with both the Saskatoon and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras.
An active composer, Bill's original works and orchestral arrangements can be found on the programs of several orchestras and ensembles throughout Canada, the US and Europe with works broadcast in over 20 countries. Bill is committed to music education of the highest calibre producing and writing several symphonic educational programs and working with youth ensembles throughout BC’s lower mainland as well as working at the Vancouver Symphony School of Music, the Glenn Gould Professional School, and the National Academy Orchestra of Canada.
A strong advocate for orchestral music, Bill is dedicated to exploring new ways of bridging the classical music experience into the 21st century through creative programming, community-oriented collaborations, socially engaged concert experiences, and utilizing social media and digital platforms to connect with new audiences
