In medieval Spain, Christians, Muslims, and Jews shared the same streets, the same marketplaces, and, at times, the same melodies. This moment in history bears a name: convivencia, that fragile and fertile coexistence whose echoes this program traces across centuries and across movements around the Mediterranean. Through the songs, the figure of a young woman gradually emerges, by turns a flower, a lover, a nomad, or a stranger. Her many faces trace a quest for identity woven from desire, encounter, uprooting, and loss.

Mozarabic, Spanish, and Andalusian-Arabic songs meet here with Ladino songs of the Sephardic tradition, repertoires that carry within them the traces of migrations, encounters, and the cultures that shaped them. Convivencia thus gives voice not to a fixed historical moment, but to living traditions, ceaselessly displaced, transformed, and brought into dialogue across time.

Carried by Gabrielle Cloutier and Sabah Lachgar on voice, Joshua Greenberg on oud, and Ziya Tabassian on percussion, Convivencia weaves a sensitive dialogue between these plural musical memories. In a world marked by conflict and division, this performance opens up a suspended space, almost outside of time, where cultures, beliefs, and peoples can finally meet.
