Haphazardly evacuated from an incoming Napoleonic invasion, Dom João VI’s arrival marked Rio de Janeiro as the Portuguese imperial capital. The composer-king fashioned the city as a tropical European capital, with court musicians and the Royal Portuguese Library in tow. A sacred music concert of the king and his creole musikers.
