It is on the road of exile that the band Labess finds its musical identity: plural, free, and vibrant. It is nourished by the Algerian roots and the vast journey of artist Nedjim Bouizzoul. Labess is a journey that begins in Algiers, in the popular neighborhood of Hussein-Dey. Nedjim Bouizzoul grows up immersed in the chaâbi music of his "big brother" musicians, searching for his voice and his path. Deep within, he hears a call—his guitar and North America. At the age of 18, he migrates with his mother and sisters to Quebec, where he plays in the streets or in the subway. Defining himself as a self-taught street musician, he discovers cafés-concerts and begins his first musical collaborations. This is the birth of Labess, the name of the band and its debut album, Tout va bien (2007). The music is open to the four winds of the world: African sounds, Gypsy rumba, flamenco… The voice rises in multiple languages—Algerian dialectal Arabic, Spanish, and French. Deep and committed. In 2021, the fourth album Yemma is released, a tribute to his mother who sacrificed everything to give him a chance to soar. The journey continues, as Labess electrifies audiences in North Africa and beyond.
