JALBERT BEAULIEU THIS IS A REAL PLACE

THE DUO COMPOSED OF FRANÇOIS JALBERT AND JÉRÔME BEAULIEU ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF ITS DEBUT LPTHIS A REAL PLACE —, AVAILABLE ON SEPTEMBER 22ND AND TO BE CELEBRATED ON SEPTEMBER 26TH AT VERRE BOUTEILLE IN MONTREAL AND ON SEPTEMBER 27TH AT MAELSTRØM ST-ROCH IN QUEBEC CITY

While one is a versatile guitar player able to transition from jazz to rock to electronic music in seconds, the other is a seasoned pianist, best know for his award-winning trio (Jazz en Rafale award in 2011, Grand Prize at Rimouski’s Festi-Jazz in 2011, 2013-2014 Révélation Radio-Canada Musique and Félix in the jazz creation category at 2014 ADISQ gala). Together, Jalbert and Beaulieu — both composers and long-time collaborators — successfully combine jazz and folk and manage to pay tribute to the historical character of their respective musical instruments by adding gipsy and bluegrass textures to their blend every now and then.

This Is A Real Place gathers eleven original and minimalist compositions, all of which were co-written and co-arranged by the two brilliant instrumentalists. The record marks a turning point in François Jalbert’s (John Jacob Magistery, Tunnel, Guillaume Martineau Lucioles, Olivier Babaz Trio, Joel Miller, Sienna Dahlen, Eveline Gregoire Rousseau, Avalon Jazz Band) and Jérôme Beaulieu’s  (Misc, Bellflower, Hichem Khalfa Quartet, Lo-Fi Octet, Antoine Pelegrin Quintet, Alex Bellegarde Trio, Bomata, Les Brunettes, Zale Seck, Ivy) impressive and challenging careers.

Recorded in Montreal at Breakglass studio by sound engineer Tonio Morin-Vargas (Bernard Adamus, Mark Bérubé, Les Passagers, Bellflower, Guillaume Martineau) and mastered by Grey Market Mastering’s Ryan Morey (Arcade Fire, Half Moon Run, Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers, Plants and Animals), This Is A Real Place makes its own line. Its introspective and slightly melancholic title track captivates with its striking beauty. The musical piece sets the course for a well-thought journey. From the syncopated "Clark’s Reel" to the western "Snack Bar", the bewitching and enigmatic "Épisode 2" and the dark and well-titled "Brouillard", the listener can easily feel the proximity and enter the narrative. Ambient noise, crackling, breathing and even laughter are enhanced by intimate sound recording techniques.

Through flowing and distinct instrumentations, the Jalbert Beaulieu duo leverages its uniqueness and skillfully plays with various dynamics to make them its own. Lucky them, they are in good hands.
