Tehrani Drom
Taraf Syriana and guest artists
With Parisa Karim Molan & Habib Hoseini (voice), Ziya Tabassian (percussion)
(Syria, Moldavia, Switzerland, Iran, Québec)

Exiled peoples have left an indelible mark on the world. The Dom migrated out of India over 1,000 years ago, making their way through Persia, the Middle East and Turkey before reaching Europe, where they became known as the Roma. They absorbed elements of the many cultures they encountered while also influencing the people whose paths they crossed.

Heir to the millennia-old musical traditions of the Levant, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, Taraf Syriana will take the stage to perform the unique repertoire of Syria’s and Persia’s Roma peoples. Rarely heard today, this music serves as a fascinating bridge between these two countries, with melodies and instrumentations that reveal intriguing commonalities.

The show will feature Parisa Karim Molan, who grew up in Iran and pursued studies in classical singing. Her distinctive timbre embodies the heartbreak of exile, for music that captures the spirit of displaced people and crackles with the fire of their resilience. She will be joined by the talented singer Habib Hoseini and percussionist Ziya Tabassian.

Taraf Syriana is comprised of Sergiu Popa on accordion, Naeem Shanwar on the qanun, Omar Abou Afach on viola and Noémy Braun on the sesta corda, a six-string cello that produces sounds similar to the guembri, kamancheh and sitar. This exceptional ensemble is known for their deep dives into ancient musical legacies shaped by encounters between peoples and civilizations.
