DEBAMITRA SENGUPTA ET ENSEMBLE

Debamitra Sengupta, internationally acclaimed Odissi exponent, has been appreciated both as a performer and choreographer in the field of classical Odissi. Her footwork is nimble, her sinewy movements are sculpturesque and her abhinaya is mesmerizing. A passionate Odissi learner, Debamitra joined a workshop by the late Padmavibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra in the eighties and was so enamoured by the maestro that she took the most vital decision of her life to be a professional classical dancer. So she left her post-graduation in Geology and pursued her dance training under the renowned Guru, often visiting and staying at his Cuttack residence. Since more than three decades Debamitra Sengupta has created sheer magic with her performances. She runs the Odissi institution Kolkata Mayur Lalit and conducts workshops all over India in addition to teaching through Skype across the world. Debamitra is also into various social activities; she is the Dance Teacher and Counsellor at the Alipore Correctional Home for Women & Children, Kolkata, looking after the physical and mental wellbeing of the inmates and their children.
