Université Laval's Bureau de la vie étudiante propose a guided cruise on the St. Lawrence River and a guided tour of the Grosse Île and Irish Memorial National Historic Site.
Located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River and long off-limits to visitors, Grosse-Île was Canada's main immigration gateway for almost 100 years and served as a quarantine station from 1832 to 1937 to combat epidemics. Walk in the footsteps of the more than 4.3 million immigrants who landed on the island and admire the beauty of this deeply moving place.
Grosse-Île has over 40 heritage buildings to visit and 8 km of hiking trails to discover. One foot in nature, the other in history - that's what Grosse-Île is all about!
The day consists of a guided cruise from Berthier-sur-Mer to Grosse-Île, during which you'll discover the St. Lawrence River from all angles and in all its autumn colors.
Once arrived, we will spend around 6 hours on Grosse-Île, where you can explore the island at your leisure. You can also take one of Parks Canada's guided tours of heritage buildings, cemeteries and other key sites to learn about the history of the island and of immigration to Canada in the 19th century.
A tourist train is also available to take you the other parts of the island.
